Many Tajiks look back at Soviet Tajikistan as a better world that was lost to capitalist barbarism. Decades of work to industrialize the country, modernize agriculture, and bring the people out of a millennia-old legacy of poverty, was destroyed by a genocidal civil war that followed the USSR's collapse.
