In the early hours of October 27th, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) commenced with a large-scale ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. This operation began against the backdrop of an ongoing Israeli assault on Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has committed myriad, unabashed war crimes which, while typical for the Zionist regime, have skyrocketed since the start of the IDF’s “Operation Swords of Iron.” The entity Israel faces increasing pressure and widespread international condemnation for its massacres.
In addition to their attempted full-ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, the IDF is confronting the logistical and morale impacts of a multi-front war in their "own" backyard. The IDF currently faces daily border clashes and exchanges of indirect fire with Hezbollah on the Israel-Lebanon border.
Risks of a Wider War
Israel has evacuated all cities within 2 kilometers of their border with Lebanon, indicating that it may be preparing contingencies for an incursion by Hezbollah forces, and that authorities are eager to avoid further capture of Israeli citizens, as Hamas and other groups accomplished during “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7th. In the largest operation in decades, the Palestinian resistance successfully captured about 400 Israelis along the Gaza border and transported them back to the Gaza Strip.
The Zionist entity also continues its daily strikes within the borders of Syria. These crimes of aggression target both government and civilian infrastructure, including international airports, in a push to disrupt logistics in the county and to prevent countries like Iran from supporting anti-Zionist forces in the region. As the conflict continues to escalate, the IDF will find themselves in a more vulnerable position, despite the backing of two aircraft carrier groups and superior military equipment and weapons.
Leading up to its ground incursion, the IDF has waged a relentless and indiscriminate bombing campaign against largely civilian infrastructure within Gaza, including hospitals, ambulances, and schools. It is estimated by the United Nations that even at this early point in the conflict nearly 1.5 million Palestinians have been displaced, over 8,000 have been killed and tens of thousands wounded.
The IDF has been successful at cutting off all avenues of communication and life sustaining supplies to one of the most densely populated places on earth. This has not been done incidentally but as a clear-cut case of Israeli military strategy in which mostly Palestinian non-combatants face extreme violence, destruction, and death.
Superpowers Face Off
The partisan politics of the imperialist and anti-imperialist world camps clashed on the world stage October 25th, when the People's Republic of China and Russian Federation joined in the United Nations Security Council to veto a US-UK resolution that would have recognized Israel's right to “self defense” and condemned Hamas for its initial incursion into Israel at the start of this month.
The Russian government correctly criticized the imperialists' draft resolution, arguing that it “represented Security Council authorization of a ground offensive in Gaza by Israel while thousands of Palestinian children will continue to die.” The Chinese authorities added that “the draft does not reflect the world's strongest calls for a ceasefire, an end to the fighting, and it does not help resolve the issue.”
What is as clear as ever is that the Israeli military, acting on behalf of US imperialism, has no interest in peace. The IDF, in coordination with the US, will continue to target schools, hospitals, and humanitarian aid missions in pursuit of their genocidal ambitions. Military and political leaders in Israel correctly understand that the only way to stop the struggle for Palestinian liberation would be to drive out or wipe out Palestinians. For while Palestinian people are forced to exist in the largest internment camp in world history, they will resist against their occupiers until all of Palestine is free from the yoke of Zionist oppression.
